The Shepherd Struck, the Sheep Scattered

2–3 minutes

This is what the Lord had me read this morning. At first I was pretty confused as to the meaning behind it, what was significant about this in my life today?
Zechariah 13:7-9

7 “Awake, sword, against my shepherd,
against the man who is close to me!”
declares the LORD Almighty.
“Strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered,
and I will turn my hand against the little ones.
8 In the whole land,” declares the LORD,
“two-thirds will be struck down and perish;
yet one-third will be left in it.
9 This third I will put into the fire;
I will refine them like silver
and test them like gold.
They will call on my name
and I will answer them;
I will say, ‘They are my people,’
and they will say, ‘The LORD is our God.’”

In verse 7, “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered” was actually quoted by Jesus in Matthew 26:31 and Mark 14:27 when Jesus tells the disciples that they will all fall away because of Him, and He informed Peter that he would disown him three times.

Today, I can relate to this meaning that even now we will all “speak and act” like disciples of Christ, but will we be part of the 1/3 left standing in the end or the 2/3 that are struck down because of our unbelief? When the day of the Lord comes, not one person on earth will escape judgement. I know that in my heart I want to be part of the 1/3 that remains, but am I really strong enough in my faith?

This could also tell me that even right now, in our lives here on earth today, that 2/3 of us are dying spiritually and only 1/3 of the entire population of this earth are truly walking with the Lord and being refined and tested!!

Have I been doing enough to find spiritual life, or do I continue to sin so much that I will experience spiritual death? I will meditate on this often, because this is a question that should never be too far from our minds if we are determined to live like Christ, and to have life with Him after death! Your thoughts?
